About the clinic
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at SMIMS traces its origins to Velayudhan Pillai Memorial Hospital, where it was first established by Dr. Rema V. Nair, Director of SMIMS. With the institution's conversion to a medical college in 2006, the department expanded to provide comprehensive clinical services, academic training and research in women's health. Care spans antenatal services, high-risk pregnancy management, infertility, menopause, urogynecology and gynaecological cancer management — supported by expertise in minimally invasive and advanced surgical techniques. SMIMS is the only private hospital in Kanyakumari District approved under the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Financial Assistance Program. Specialty clinics in urogynecology, high-risk obstetrics, gynaecologic oncology and obstetric ultrasound ensure focused, protocol-based care. The department leads the URV-SHE initiative for women's pelvic floor health, and pursues research in molecular and genomic sciences across infertility, preeclampsia, gynaecological cancers and pelvic floor disorders.
